At long last, we have an update on the Kawhi Leonard free agency saga and the update is ... there is no update. Or at least there won’t be today, according to Cris Carter, who’s become an unlikely go-to source for developments on Leonard over the past few days.?
The Pro Football Hall of Famer used to share an agent with Leonard, so there’s reason to believe he’s somewhat connected to Leonard and his camp, who it sounds like want it known that they’re still deliberating on their options:
After very impressive meetings with the Toronto Raptors and others yesterday, reigning NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard and his team haven’t made a decision and there won’t any announcement TODAY. Enjoy the 4th of July #KawhiWatch— Cris Carter (@criscarter80) July 4, 2019
What does this mean for Lakers fans?
Well, for starters, it means that the fans and writers in United States will be able to enjoy their Fourth of July barbecues without having to check their phones every five seconds. Will that stop us from doing it? Probably not, but at least it’s an option now!
Unfortunately, it also means that the Lakers will have to wait at least another day to hear back from Leonard, which coincidentally means another day will go by without Los Angeles making an impact signing. Meanwhile, almost every other team and free agent will go about their business as usual.
Given how lackluster the remaining free agent pool is, waiting another day could hurt the Lakers, but if the end result if a big three of Leonard, Anthony Davis and LeBron James, it’s hard to argue it wasn’t all worth the risk. If they don’t get a commitment from Leonard when this is all said and done, though, Rob Pelinka is going to need to get creative with the way they build the roster around James and Davis.
Did I read somewhere that Monta Ellis and Amar’e Stoudemire are trying to make a comeback?
