Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Thursday tweeted that Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.) is "right" in criticizing Congress for becoming increasingly partisan, retweeting an op-ed penned by Amash in which he stated that "our politics is in a partisan death spiral."
Ocasio-Cortez retweeted an opinion piece written by Amash for The Washington Post, in which he announced that he is leaving the Republican Party. Amash is the only sitting GOP member of Congress who has called for President Trump to be impeached.
In the op-ed, Amash wrote that "we are fast approaching the point ... where Congress exists as little more than a formality to legitimize outcomes dictated by the president, the speaker of the House and the Senate majority leader."
Amash tweeted out his op-ed on Thursday morning, noting that "Today, I'm declaring my independence."
Trump reacted to Amash's announcement by tweeting that it was "great news" for Republicans and labeling Amash "a total loser."
"Great news for the Republican Party as one of the dumbest & most disloyal men in Congress is 'quitting' the Party," Trump tweeted. "No Collusion, No Obstruction! Knew he couldn't get the nomination to run again in the Great State of Michigan. Already being challenged for his seat. A total loser."
